5CB (nematic liquid crystal at room temperature) single emulsion functionalized with PAA-b-LCP (5CBPAA droplet) exhibited bipolar and radial orientations above and below PAA’s pKa, respectively. 5CBPAA droplet immobilized with glucose oxidase (GOx) and cholesterol oxidase (ChO) detected small amounts of glucose and cholesterol, respectively, from a radial-to-bipolar (R-B) orientational change observed through a polarized optical microscope. 5CB double emulsion including a SDS/TWEEN 80 aqueous solution in the core was also functionalized with GOx and ChO-immobilized PAA-b-LCP (5CBPAA-GOx and 5CBPAA-ChO hollow droplets, respectively). The defect structures of the 5CBPAA-enzyme hollow droplet were changed with LC anchoring states (parallel or perpendicular anchoring) which were strongly dependent on the enzymatic reactions. The enzyme-immobilized 5CBPAA hollow droplets were successfully demonstrated for biosensors with different colors in the core for bar-code applications in this study. |
