Recently, development of polymer materials with biodegradable characteristics is increased demand for eco-friendly sustainable technologies. In this research, we prepared polylactic acid (PLA) and starch polymer films with anti-biofouling and antibacterial properties by using beeswax and plant essential oil. Synergy effects were expressed by applying wax lipid nanocarriers to enhance the antibacterial effects (i.e., high surface area, release rate control) of existing essential oil and increase thermal stability. Additionally, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis showed antibacterial activity of more than 90%, respectively, as well as excellent anti-pollution performance (less than 1% surface coverage) against various organic/inorganic pollutants (e.g., dirt, dust, oil, soot etc.). We anticipate that this research will have many practical applications in the field of polymer-based biodegradable packaging materials with regard to potential cross-contamination. |
