Biomaterial-based implant has been attracting attention as being effective for local cancer treatment. However, there are limitations of implant with uncontrolled drug release behavior causing undesirable side effects. Phase-change materials (PCMs) have been studied as a biomaterial-based implant due to their phase switchable ability from solid to liquid depending on temperature. We designed the controlled drug delivery implant consisted of magnetic nanoparticles that can generate heat under magnetic fields and a PCMs containing the anti-cancer drug. We demonstrated that drug release from implant was turned on/off as the external magnetic field was turned on-off. In in vitro experiments, the effective drug release from the implant enhanced the cancer cell killing effect. Based on these results, our implant that can control the drug release under the magnetic fields are suitable for next-generation local cancer treatment. |
