Temperature-responsive Polyelectrolyte Complex Hydrogels of the ABA-type Triblock Copolymers for Biomedical Applications |

Injectable hydrogels have been studied as smart biomaterials for biopharmaceutical applications because they have an ability to retain high water content and increase biocompatibility and permeability. In this study, we report that two different stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte ABA-type triblock copolymers composed of thermally responsive block flanked by charged blocks at both ends were prepared by reversible-addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization and oxidation reaction, and mixture of these oppositely charged triblock copolymers formed polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) hydrogels via strong electrostatic interaction between the charged blocks. As temperature increased, these PEC hydrogels showed shrinkage of the hydrogel network due to the collapse of thermally responsive block. Thus, the PEC hydrogels would have great potential for injectable hydrogel-based biomedical applications. |
