Self-assembly of colloidal nanocrystals enables sophisticated design of novel materials that cannot be achieved by conventional techniques. In this work, I will present the manipulation of the packing symmetry of polystyrene-coated Au nanoparticles (Au@PS NPs). I will discuss the factors that can affect and determine the final packing symmetry of polymer-coated nanocrystals, whose self-assembly behavior is different from that of conventional alkyl-chain coated nanocrystals. Finally, I will show the theoretical prediction of packing symmetry and interparticle distance by the combination of "effective softness" of NPs and optimal packing model. This work demonstrates effective routes to control the self-assembly behavior of NPs, which is very important for the fabrication of NP-based optoelectronic devices. |
