Exploring IrO2 Catalysts for Room-Temperature Electrochemical Methane Oxidation |

Under mild conditions, methane oxidation is a promising methane utilization technique that enables direct partial oxidation. Liquid electrochemical methane oxidation is one of the strong candidates for this purpose. In this study, we present the electrochemical methane oxidation using an IrO2 catalyst. The IrO2 catalyst has a high surface density of open metal sites that can accommodate reactive oxygen species and also shows a low barrier energy to methane activation. We present the methane-alcohol conversion on an IrO2 catalyst and elucidate the mechanism by DFT calculations. In addition, we optimize the flow rates of methane and electrolyte in the continuous reaction, achieving superior methane-alcohol conversion rates compared to prior results. |
