Porous poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane displays excellent chemical and thermal stability, which is highly desirable in chemical separation processes under harsh operating conditions. However, the hydrophobic nature of PTFE membranes has limited their industrial use. In this study, we report a facile co-solvent approach to functionalize porous PTFE membranes by coating a hydrophilic crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (XLPVA) layer (< 20 nm). By using alcohol/water co-solvents, PVA solution could be penetrated into the inner pore networks of PTFE membrane without additional pretreatments. The XLPVA-coated PTFE membranes showed enhanced hydrophilicity with a shortened crosslinking time (< 1h) compared to other literature. The resultant PTFE membranes were highly water-permeable without any pre-wetting step, exhibiting a water flux of ~200 LMH/bar comparable with uncoated one with improved micropollutant rejection (~99%). |
