Herein, we identify the unique trifunctional active sites of ReS2 and NiFe layered double hydroxide heteronanosheets (ReS2/NiFe-LDH) for highly efficient and durable integrated cascade Zn-air battery/electrolyzer systems. It was discovered that, in addition to the edge and surface sites of NiFe-LDH for both oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction activities, the unprecedented activity of the ReS2/NiFe-LDH heteronanosheets for hydrogen evolution reaction is emerged from the S-O bonds at the heterointerface. The outstanding trifunctional eletrocatalytic activities and the mechanism understanding ensure the use of ReS2/NiFe-LDH heteronanosheets for the development of integrated cascade battery/electrolyzer systems, with which the electricity storage in a battery mode and the H2 production in an electrolyzer mode can be efficiently switched with high round-trip efficiency (61%) and Faraday efficiency (96%), far exceeding those of existing battery-powered electrolyzers. |
