Actuation Behavior of Nafion-IPMCs Containing Polypyrrole-Alumina Composite Filler |

For further development of ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators based on Nafion electrolytes, a polypyrrole (PPy)/alumina composite filler was synthesized by in situ polymerization of pyrrole on alumina particles and the composite filler was incorporated into the Nafion matrix of IPMC. The IPMCs containing the pristine PPy filler as a base sample displayed unremarkable actuation performances, while the displacement of the IPMC bearing 3 wt% of the PPy/alumina composite filler showed 2.2 times larger than that of the bare Nafion-based IPMC at 3 V; that of the IPMC with 1 wt% of the composite filler 2.7 times at a low applied potential of 1.5 V. Causes of the high performance and the low-voltage-operatable character for the IPMCs with the PPy/alumina filler were disclosed engaging cyclic voltammetry and other measurement. |
