This study focuses on improving performance and durability of Nafion for polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis(PEMWE) by biaxial stretching the membrane. To replace expensive Nafion and high gas permeability, a membrane is required for the lower resistance and lower hydrogen crossover. Here, Nafion 117 is biaxially stretched up to 6.4 times to reduce the membrane thickness, and increase the hydrophilic channels’ tortuosity. Due to the more tortuos hydrophilic pathways, the hydrogen permeability is reduced by a factor of 1.6, which is beneficial to prevent the membrane deteritoriation and also to widen the operating current density range. The thinned and planarly stretched Nafion shows better cell performance than the thick Nafion due to the reduced ohmic resistance. Also, reduction of the difference in swelling ratio between the catalyst layer and the membrane enhanced the durability by improving the interfacial stability. |
