Liquefaction of biomass under hydrothermal and solvothermal conditions can offer environmentally benign and effective reaction conditions for the production of biofuels and biochemicals owing to the unique physical properties of solvents, including low viscosity, fast diffusion, zero surface tension, tunable physical properties, and high reactivity. The bio-oil produced under the hydrothermal and solvothermal conditions exhibits high calorific values and high stability, which is suitable to be directly used as a combustion fuel and as a feed for subsequent upgrading Herein, liquefaction of various types of biomass (wood, macroalgae, lignin) in supercritical solvents is discussed in detail. The importance of liquid product separation after the liquefaction is covered. |
