We represent an eco-friendly and cost-effective silk fibroin (SF)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) functional hydrogel, which was found to be highly effective for the removal of various metal ions in contaminated solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the SF/PEI hydrogel for the Cu2+, Zn2+, Ag+, Pb2+, Ni2+, and Cd2+ was found to be 163.9, 125.0, 200.0, 185.2, 140.8 and 169.5 mg/g, respectively, abiding the adsorption isotherm and kinetics with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. After the adsorption step, we insitu reduced the Cu2+ and Ag+ ions, forming corresponding metal nanoparticles (NPs)-decorated SF/PEI hydrogels which demonstrated excellent catalytic and antibacterial properties, respectively. Based on the biodegradability, excellent adsorption capacity and catalytic/antibacterial property, the SF/PEI hydrogel could be utilized as an effective and potential material for the remediation of metal ions contaminated effluents. |
