Gelatin is a natural biopolymer derived from collagen in animal tissues. It is widely used in biomedical fields because of its biocompatibility. However, the main sources for commercial gelatin are limited to mammalian sources such as pig bones and skins. Fish gelatin studied an alternative to replace mammalian gelatin. Because fish gelatin has lower concentrations of proline and hydroxyproline compared with mammalian gelatin, it has specific characteristics such as higher viscosity and lower immunogenicity. Spirulina, a family of green algae, is already being used as a pharmacological additive. Spirulina has the biological activities such as anti-microbial and anti-coagulant properties. In this study, we incorporated biological activity of spirulina into fish gelatin nanofibrous scaffold using electrospinning method. We examined the effect of spirulina content on the spinnability. After that, in vitro studies were performed to evaluate the cell viability and antibacterial activity. |
