Controlling Arrays of Smectic A Liquid Crystal Defect Structures for Various Quantum Dot Patterns |

Arrangement control and large-area fabrication are one of important issues for self-assembling soft building blocks. Toric focal conic domains (TFCDs) in smectic A liquid crystal phase is one of fascinating candidates for self-assembling lithographic template. In this study, we achieved various 2-dimensional arrangements of TFCDs with large-area by using new stamp pressing method. We revealed arrangement of TFCD of the Smectic A phase are strongly influenced by shape of domains at the previous nematic phase. We successfully obtained a variety of spatially arranged micropatterns of TFCD array such as square, rhombic and hexagonal lattices. We also show various TFCDs patterns can be used as templates by assessing quantum dot trapping on the core of TFCDs. |
