It is important to measure the tension of the interface between air and water in-situ because the change of the interfacial tension can estimate the adsorption and desorption behaviors of surfactants/colloidal particles with time. However, the Wilhelmy-plate tensiometer has been mostly provided as the part of the Langmuir trough system, and it can be thus difficult to utilize in some specialized cases where general trough system cannot be applicable. In this study, we report that a simply customized tensiometer, capable of measuring the surface tension with a sensitivity of 0.1mN was successfully developed using a force sensor, a filter paper and a signal amplifier. As the force sensor, a s-beam load cell that measures the force with a change in resistance due to the applied force was used, and the filter paper which was oriented perpendicular to the surface of the liquid was utilized for adapting the Wilhelmy plate method. |
