Silver nanoparticles (NPs) have been known as an effective non-toxic and environmentally friendly antimicrobial agent because their toxicity is lower to human cells in comparison with bacteria. Therefore, silver NPs have been used extensively in many consumer products by incorporating them in paints, wound dressing, plastics, and others. To further extend the antimicrobial activity of silver NPs, one of the strategy is to embed NPs inside polymer hydrogel matrix. Here, we utilized alginate hydrogel due to its biocompatibility properties. To this end, we modified sodium alginate with methacrylate group by reacting sodium alginate and 2-aminoethyl methacrylate in the presence of EDC and NHS. Then, we incorporate silver NPs into the hydrogel by mixing it with methacrylated alginate and exposed it to the UV light in the present of photoinitiator. With the prepared NP-containing hydrogel, we further investigated antimicrobial effects with changing the concentration of Ag NPs. |
