A new photo-active cationic gemini surfactant having an azobenzene group and an alkyl chain, N-(azobenzene-4-oxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-N’-(tetradecyloxy-2’-hydroxypropyl)-N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethylene diammonium dimethylsulfate (AZ14-2A2S), has been synthesized and the examination on the surface-active properties of AZ14-2A2S has been carried out upon UV/vis light in the aqueous solution. The synthesized AZ14-2A2S surfactant was isomerized to cis-trans mixtures containing 92.5% of cis form by UV light (λ = 350 nm), and then the cis form was reconverted again to 74 % of trans form by vis light (λ > 445 nm). The cmc value of trans-AZ14-2A2S was 5.83x10-5 mol/L and cis isomer was 2.13x10-4 mol/L, indicating that the ratio of cmccis to cmctrans of AZ14-2A2S is 3.66.
