Upcycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate to sustainable fuels by aqueous phase hydrodeoxygenation |

Energy production and preserving an immaculate environment are the two concerning issues we are facing in modern times. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most extensively used commodity plastics due to its high mechanical and thermal properties. Given the demanding need for environmental pollution curtailment, the advanced technologies to degrade PET waste are extremely prudent. The catalytic system converting the aromatic waste plastic into value-added cyclic hydrocarbons and cyclic oxygenated hydrocarbons can add a new pathway for plastic recycling which offers a feasible solution for the diminution of the high accumulation of aromatic plastic waste in the environment.This study explores the aqueous phase hydrogenation of PET over Ru metal on different acidic supports such as HY zeolites for the concurrent depolymerization and selective cleavage of C-O bonds in PET for the formation of cyclic hydrocarbons. We will show that the combination of hydrogenation function of Ru metal with the acidity of supports play a key role in the maximum production of cyclic hydrocarbons and oxygenated cyclic hydrocarbons through hydrogenolysis or decarboxylation. |
