Synthesis of Associative Silica Nanoplatelets with Controllable Wettability Using Hexagonal Structured Polypeptide Templates |

Colloidal particleswith 2-dimensional geometry exhibit high adhesion energy at the interface sothat there have been tries to synthesize new types of particles with a tailoredplatelet structure. Herein, we introduce an approach to synthesize associative silicananoplateltes (ASNPs) with controllable wettability. For this, we synthesizedsilica nanoplatelets (SiNPs) by silicification on hexagonal platelet-structuredpolypeptide templates via a condensation reaction. A suitable surfacewettability of the SiNPs was achieved by the combined grafting of3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and hexyltrimethoxysilane (HTMS) throughsilane coupling reactions. Taking advantage of high adhesion energy coming fromthe platelet-geomerty of SiNPs, we could easily obtain stable O/W and W/O typePickering emulsions. These results highlighted that the SiNPs developed in thisstudy could have great potential for applications to complex multiphasic fluidsystems. |
