Facile Fabrication of Multi-Layer Structured Thin Separator for Lithium Ion Batteries via Phase Separation and Selective Etching Methods |

In this work, a novel thin PVDF-HFP membrane with highly porous layered structure has been fabricated via the combination of evaporation induced phase separation and selective solvent etching methods. The developed membrane possesses larger amount of electrolyte uptake and excellent electrolyte retention resulting from its superior electrolyte wettability and highly porous feature, and thereby leading to better electrochemical performance than those from the commercial polyolefin separator (Celgard). We believe that the elaborate design of multi-layered structures allows to synthesize a new kind of thin separator with significant improvements in the mechanical and electrochemical performance and also critical suppression of short circuit, leading to the presented membrane become a desirable separator for the high-power, high-energy storage devices with safer operation. |
