Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has aroused broad research interests as a promising route for solar energy conversion and storage. Owing to their excellent durability and relative low cost, metal oxide semi-conductors have been extensively researched as photoelectrode materials. Herein, we propose a novel strategy for metal oxide photoanode water oxidation performance improvement by facile surface electrochemical treatment. Without introduction of any other cocatalysts, the ionic passivation strategy lead to a significant change of the WO3 photoanode surface ratio of W5+/W6+. Optimization of the surface defect, a nearly double improvement on the photo current of WO3 photoanode was applied at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under 1 sun illumination. Importantly, our report provides a novel and effective way to achieve high PEC performance of spinel structure photoanode. |
