Hemocompatible surface modifying additives with an polyurethane oligomeric chain |

To improve blood compatibility in blood contact medical devices, coating and grafting have been used as general methods. Although they have been applied extensively, they present drawbacks such as adhesive stability problem for coating and density variation problem for grafting. In this study, blending of hydrophilic additive with oligomeric backbone was used to improve the surface properties of PVC. Several types of oligomeric polyurethane with zwitterion were used as additives. In the first study, polyurethane additives with sulfobetaine side chains were synthesized with metal ions achieving both antifouling and antibacterial properties. In the second study, additives consist of fluorinated back bone and sulfobetaine side chains were synthesized. The fluorinated groups induced surface enrichment of additives and enhanced their anti-thrombotic property by the synergistic effect with zwitterion groups. These studies encouraged current ongoing study based on architectural structure. |
