This presentation presents a survey of recent research aimed at systematically tuning membrane performance for gas separation such as hydrogen separation, natural gas purification, and air separation by: (1) optimizing solubility and solubility selectivity in polar rubbery polymers to enhance CO2 removal from mixtures with H2 and from natural gas and (2) tailoring free volume element size and size distribution in highly rigid, glassy polymers to achieve high gas diffusion and diffusivity selectivity to separate CO2 from natural gas. The presentation will be that synthetic polymer science continues to offer fascinating and fruitful opportunities to prepare materials with interesting property profiles. |
