Short tandem repeat (STR) assays have become an indispensable and routine technique in modern forensic casework. However, the limited capabilities of current genotyping technologies, which are time-consuming, labor-intensive and expensive, have resulted in backlogs in forensic laboratories around the world. To address these issues, we developed an integrated portable micro total analysis system, consisting of a microfluidic PCR-capillary electrophoresis device together with an instrument that contains 4-color confocal laser fluorescence detection, electronics and pneumatics for chip operation which enable rapid and sensitive on-site forensic STR analysis. |
