Large-scale Synthesis of Uniform-sized Nanocrystals and their Designed Assembly and Multifunctional Biomedical Applications |

We developed new generalized synthetic procedures to produce uniform-sized nanocrystals of many transition metals and their oxides without a size selection process. We report the ultra-large-scale (10s of grams) synthesis of uniform magnetite nanocrystals from the thermolysis of metal-oleate complexes. Combinations of various nanostructured materials can offer multifunctional nanomedical platforms. We synthesized hollow magnetite nanocapsules via wrap/bake/peel process and used them for both the MRI contrast agent and drug delivery vehicle. We reported on the fabrication of monodisperse nanoparticles embedded in uniform pore-sized mesoporous silica spheres for simultaneous MRI, fluorescence imaging, and drug delivery. |
