Photonic Gels for CO2 Sensors : Effects of Ionic Liquids |

Stimuli-responsive photonic materials have garnered increasing research interest due to their versatile scientific and engineering applications. Recently, our group reported block copolymer photonic gels sensitive to external chemical and electrical stimuli, and demonstrated their potential applications in the field of sensors and displays. Herein we report another application of tunable block copolymer photonic gels in monitoring carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 sensitive photonic gels were fabricated by functionalizing photonic gels with protic ionic liquids(ILs). The ionic liquid modified photonic gels exhibited apparent shift of photonic stop bands to the longer wavelength regime upon exposure of CO2. Depending on the species of ions pairing with ILs, the photonic gels showed different sensitivity of CO2 sensing. NMR, IR, UV and SEM were used for characterization of CO2 sensitive photonic gels. |
