Adipic acid is well known for its wide use as a monomer of nylons or an additive in cosmetics, and for its abundance due to large supply from petroleum industry. That is, petroleum-based sources with low oxygen contents have led to successful large-scale synthesis of adipic acid. While chemical conversion to adipic acid has rarely been conducted except for the synthesis from petroleum-derived resouces, as reported earlier, we introduced rhenium-catalyzed deoxydehydration (DODH) reaction for the removal of oxygen contents from the oxygen abundant source, galactose. However, the synthetic route involved undesired reaction, esterification due to highly acidic rhenium catalyst, and resulted a problem in condensation of solvent. Accordingly, we wish to suggest a new and direct synthetic route as well as purification method for the synthesis of bio-based adipic acid. |
