Hypoxia-sensitive block copolymer bearing nitroaromatics for drug delivery |

Hypoxia, an oxygen-deficient condition, is one of the representative hallmarks of cancer. In this study, we prepared an amphiphilic block copolymer which can form self-assembled nanoparticles in biological fluids and selectively release the hydrophobic agents under hypoxic conditions. The copolymer was prepared using poly(ethylene glycol) as the hydrophilic block and poly(ε-(4-nitro)benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine) as the hydrophobic block. The block copolymer bearing nitroaromatics formed nanoparticles and encapsulated doxorubicin (DOX) in an aqueous condition. The DOX-loaded micelles showed rapid intracellular release of DOX under the hypoxic condition. Overall, we have demonstrated that hypoxia-sensitive block copolymer has the high potential as a drug carrier for treatment of hypoxia-associated diseases. |
