Synthesis and characterization of isosorbide-based chrial dopants with different linking groups in mesogenic moieties |

Isosorbide-based chiral dopants bearing different linkages such as azomethine, azo, and ester were synthesized to know their roles in phase transition and helical twisting power. Azomethine and azo linkages induced high melting temperatures compared with ester linkage and had simple crystal to isotropic transitions. However ester linkage had multiple highly ordered liquid crystal transitions. Molecular structure analysis revealed that ester linkage induced the most twisted structure and a good interaction with a host molecule to give high HTP compared with azomethine and azo linkages. Azo linkage induced the highest melting temperature but showed lower HTP than that of ester linkage. Different from azo linkage, azomethine caused a precipitation problem with a host molecule due to its more hydrophobic property. |
