Nafion/SiO2-P2O5 Hybrid Membranes for High-Temperature and Low-Humidity Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells |

A proton-conducting membrane operating at harsh operation conditions of high temperature/low humidity as well as at normal water-swollen states is a demand for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). In this study, we demonstrate a new approach, which is based on incorporating SiO2-P2O5 glass electrolytes into nanosized hydrophilic-channels of Nafion115 by in-situ sol-gel synthesis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and trimethylphosphate (TMP). The effect of SiO2-P2O5 content on the morphology, state of water, and water uptake of the hybrid membranes is quantitatively identified. The hybrid membranes showed the higher proton conductivity compared to the pristine Nafion115, which became more noticeable particularly at high temperature/low humidity. This improvement in the proton conductivity is discussed in terms of the hydrophilic channel structure and state of water. |
