Reinforced Composite Membranes Containing Hygroscopic Inorganic Moieties for High Temperature PEMFC Application |

Novel reinforced composite membranes containing hygroscopic inorganic moieties were prepared. The composite membranes were fabricated by pore-filling process where non-woven thin film and sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) was used as the substrate and the electrolyte, respectively. Here, hygroscopic inorganic materials, which can improve the water retention property at high temperature, were introduced to the substrate as well as to the polymer electrolyte. Inorganic particles (SiO2) were coated on the substrate by sol-gel process, and various amounts of TEOS was introduced to SPAES electrolyte. Compared with pristine SPAES and reinforced membranes without inorganic moieties, the composite membranes showed higher proton conductivity at high temperature and lower dimensional variation. For example, KH2-ST200 membrane having a substrate with 20wt% SiO2 particles and an electrolyte with 200 wt% TEOS has a high proton conductivity of about 0.01 S/cm at 120 oC, 48 RH%. |
