Fabrication and characterization of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers-based reinforced membranes for PEMFC applications. |

Perfluorinated membranes have been extensively used as polymer electrolyte for fuel cells. But, these membranes have some disadvantages such as reduced conductivity at low humidity or high temperature and high fuel crossover especially in PEMFC. In this study, sulfonated hydrocarbon-based reinforced membranes were prepared by impregnating nonwoven substrate with sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) ionomers. Various SPAES-XXs (XX; degree of sulfonation, 35~60% in this study) were synthesized by a direct copolymerization method using 4,4'-dichlorodiphenylsulfone(DCDPS), 3'3-disulfonate-4,4'- dichloro diphenylsulfone (SDCDPS) and 4,4'-biphenol (BP) monomers. The water uptake and dimensional stability of the reinforced membranes were measured to compare with those of pristine, and proton conductivity with humidity was observed widely as well. |
