Natural polymers derived from agricultural products (such as starch, proteins and cellulose) are the major resource for developing renewable and biodegradable polymer materials. In this work, we present a simple and green approach to preparation of biodegradable blend membranes based on wheat gluten and chitosan with various compositions. Wheat gluten/chitosan blend membranes were prepared in a casting and solvent evaporation method. These blend membranes were investigated for their miscibility and structural properties using Fourier transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffractions (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of the ratio of wheat gluten and chitosan on the mechanical properties and water barrier properties of biodegradable blend films was also investigated. The obtained results have shown that some membranes prepared under optimized processing conditions had a partially miscible structure. |
