Preparation of Anti-thrombogenic and Anti-bacterial Metal Ion Complexed Zwitterionic Polymer Additives for Implantable Medical Devices |

PVC has been used in implantable medical device fields. However, thrombus formation and infection can cause a serious health problem in blood-contacting medical device. Zwitterionic funtion al groups have been grafted on the polyurethanes backbone as anti-fouling materials to inhibit protein adsorption and biofilm formation. And metal ions were employed for pre vention of bacterial infection in humans. We designed metal ion complexed zwitterionic polyurethane (zPU) additive to confer anti-thrombogenic and ani-bacterial activities to film based on PVC. These metal ion complexed zPU additives were characterized using 1H-NMR, FTIR, and element analysis. The surface properties of the film were identified using water contact angle. The anti-fouling activity was estimated with protein adsorption test using human fibrinogen and bovine serum albumin. It is concluded that anti-bacterial effect of PVC was functionalized by blending with additives. |
