In this study, calcium oxide (CaO) was added to improve the thermal stability of a separator based on cellulose acetate (CA). CA is an inexpensive and environmentally friendly polymer that is widely used in the manufacture of porous materials, but there was a problem in thermal and mechanical stability due to its low molecular weight. Therefore, a CA-CaO separator was prepared by inducing the characteristics of calcium oxide having a high melting point and interactions in the carbonyl group with cellulose acetate. In addition, a PP⁄CA-CaO separator with improved the stability was prepared by coating a CA-CaO separator on a commercially available polypropylene film (PP). This PP⁄CA-CaO separator showed a high flux of 71.67 L⁄m2h at a pressure of 8 bar, and the thermal stability was improved by about 60 °C compared to the conventional neat CA. This means that it can be applied as a solution to the problem of improving the thermal stability of the battery separator. |
