Study on the Preparation of Chitosan Scaffold Using Biomimetic Method |

Chitosan is a naturally-derived polysaccharide composed of D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine. Chitosan is obtained from chitin shells of shrimp and other crustaceans by treating with an alkaline substance. Chitosan has been widely used as a number of biomedical uses. Chitosan can be used as hemostatic bandage, antibacterial agent, and drug carrier. In this study, we investigated the surface of chitosan scaffold was mineralized under biomimetic environment in order to develop a biocompatible hard tissue substitute. The physical and chemical properties of mineralized chitosan scaffold were examined using various analytical methods. Its biocompatibility was evaluated in terms of viability and differentiation using osteosarcoma MG63 cells. Our results demonstrated that the biomimetically mineralized chitosan scaffold can be potentially used for the preparation of artificial bone substitute. |
