Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted enormous interest from both academia and industry, since they show remarkable mechanical and electrical properties. These versatile properties of CNTs offer a variety of potential applications. For the potential applications to be realized, it requires that carbon nanotubes are dispersed in polymer matrices. However, it is difficult to homogeneously disperse CNTs, because strong van der Waals interaction between CNTs leads CNTs to form aggregated bundles. In this study, we synthesized a new compatibilizer that is an amphiphilic polymer based on PMMA and naphthalene, where naphthalene molecule is expected to interact with the surface of CNTs via the π-π interaction while PMMA is miscible with SAN matrix. The morphological structure and mechanical properties of SAN/MWCNT composites are investigated as a function of the MWCNT content. |
