There has been an increased interest in the use of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) due to more environmentally aware consumers. PLA is biodegradable with high mechanical strength and can be processed quite easily. But, PLA softens at lower temperatures compared to other commodity polymers. Cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW), which can be prepared from microcrystalline cellulose by acid hydrolysis, have attracted increasing interest as potential reinforcing nanofillers for various polymers, especially for biodegradable polymers. Eco-friendly biodegradable PLA/CNW composites were prepared by melt blending PLA and CNW, followed by compression molding. Physical properties of PLA/CNW composites were investigated using UTM, izod impact tester and DMA. Thermal properties of PLA/CNW composites were investigated using DSC and TGA. The best processing conditions to fabricate PLA/CNW composites were determined, and the effect of introducing CNW to PLA was elucidated. |
