We report here a method based on a new class of periodic templates called smectic liquid crystal (LC) lithography. In this method, smectic LCs are confined within microchannels, leading to formation of an LC structure containing an ordered array of toroidal holes due to the effect of the microchannel surfaces and air interface on the director of the smectic LC layers. Experiments in which smectic films were grown in microchannels by dynamic self-assembly using a mixture of LC molecules and fluorescent silica nanoparticles demonstrated that the toroidal domains of the smectic LCs acted as a template, trapping the nanoparticles in an ordered array. |
