Sonodynamic therapy is reactive oxygen spicies (ROS)-mediated treatment, based on the absorption of the acoustic energy and the resulting generation of ROS of sonosensitizer under ultrasound irradiation. As the deep-penetration ability of ultrasound to biological tissue, sonodynamic therapy has been arising as a new therapeutic strategy for the treatment of tumors in deeply set organs. Herein, we developed titanium oxide-based nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) for targeted sonodynamic therapy using high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), and extensively investigated characteristics of TiO2-NPs in vitro and in in vivo. The results showed that TiO2-NPs was selectively accumulated in tumor site and generated ROS of TiO2-NPs, under HIFU. Consequently, TiO2-NPs can significantly inhibit the tumor growth in superficial tumor model and deep-set tumor model. |
