The hydrated perfluorosulfonic acid-based polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) such as Nafion® are used in a limited temperature range (<100°C). Hence, much effort has gone into the development of low-cost, high performance, and temperature-resistant alternative PEM. Among various approaches, membranes based on the polybenzimidazole (PBI) and poly(2,5-benzimidazole) (ABPBI) doped with phosphoric acid have emerged as a promising candidate for high temperature PEMFC. However, the phosphoric acid (PA)-doped ABPBI membranes from the conventional imbibing method usually led to poor mechanical properties. To solve this problem, ABPBI membranes were prepared by the sol-gel transition method. We investigated characteristics of ABPBI membranes including inherent viscosity, thermal properties, mechanical properties, electrochemical properties, and so on. |
