High temperature polymers such as polybenzimidazole, polybenzoxazole and polybenzthiazole can have higher thermal and chemical stability than conventional glassy polymers due to their rigid-rod structures. However, their gas separation performances were located on the far below the upper-bound lines. In this study, strong and tough polybenzoxazole (PBO) membranes were fabricated by two different thermal cyclization reaction routes to compare their gas separation performance. Synthetic procedures were characterized by using the FT-IR spectra, X-ray diffraction patterns, and TGA-MS thermogram. Single gas permeation performances of PBO membranes rendered from two routes characterized for various small gas molecules which showed large differences on gas permeability and permselectivity according to their cyclization reaction. |
