Nanobiophotonics is a fusion technology, merged at the interface of biomedical research, photonics, nanotechnology, and materials science. Early detection and selective treatment of diseases, enabled by properly designed nanomaterials, are expected to create novel light-based modalities for next-generation therapies. In this presentation, a nanophotonics approach toward nanoprobes and nanomedicines is reported, which utilizes cell-permeable organically modified silica nanoparticles encapsulating functional dyes for aggregation-enhanced two-photon fluorescence, near-infrared fluorescence, and singlet oxygen generation. In vitro demonstrations with tumor cells, including fluorescence imaging-highlighting and photodynamic therapy, will be presented as promising nanobiophotonic applications. |
