Radical addition and fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process is one of the controlled radical polymerization techniques that prepare polymers with controlled architecture. This technique uses facile chain transfer agent (CTA) to ensure reversible degenerative transfer between polymer chains. In our previous work, we used photo-initiation process in the RAFT of vinyl acetate (VAc) to ensure rapid generation of active radicals. The results demonstrated that polymers with a specific molecular weight and a narrow PDI could be successfully prepared. The kinetic studies showed that the polymerization of VAc was well-controlled and of living characteristics up to high conversion. In this work, we checked the role of UV in the polymerization system. Controlled experiments were performed to see the effect of UV irradiation on initiation, chain transfer, and other side reactions such as photolytic decomposition of RAFT agent and polymeric chain ends. |
