Crack-free hard coating silica films were prepared by sol-gel process from twokinds of silicone alkoxide (tetraethoxysilane and methytrimethoxysilane) and two kindsof alcohols (methanol and isopropyl alcohol) with an acid catalyst, acetic acid. A silicateframework of the precursor solution was investigated by infrared spectroscopy (IR) inthe process of hydrolysis and condensation. The extent of the condensation in theintermediates was elucidated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and29Si-NMR spectroscopy. The hard coating films were characterized by IR,scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA) anddifferential scanning calroimeter (DSC). The condition for the crack-free andtransparent silica film formation was optimized in terms of starting materials for theprecursor solution as well as preparation method of the silica film.
