In Japan, population of women scientists is very low, especially in academic fields. The percentage of female researchers of Japan is 12.4% in 2007, the lowest in the world (Chart 29: International comparison of the percentage of female researchers in the White Paper on Gender Equality 2008, Cabinet Office, Japan). This data clearly shows that Japan lags behind in Gender Equality. This paper presents 1) pioneers of women scientists in Japan, 2) the national promotion program of gender equality, and 3) the future prospect in Japanese women scientists. |
