Synthesis of mesoporous titania-silica composite from rice husk and their photocatalytic properties |

Mesoporous titania-silica composite was prepared by a facile sol-gel process using cost-effective precursors at low temperature. Silica source was the rice husk, which is an agricultural waste and rich in silica. Rice husk are an excellent source of high-grade amorphous silica. Utilization of rice husk as a resource of silica is based on removal of impurities with low effort and the high specific surface. Silica was extracted from ash as sodium silicate by boiling it in sodium hydroxide solution. The extracted silica source was reacted with Titania sol yielded from titanium oxychloride to form titania-silica composite. The structure of the composite was characterized by FE-SEM, EDAX, TEM, XRD, UV-vis DRS, FTIR and nitrogen gas physisorption studies. These analyses showed that mesoporous titania-silica composites with desirable properties for photocatalysis can be obtained via this facile process |
