Radicals Anchored on Transition Metal Oxides for the Elimination of Aqueous Pollutants |

SO4•- is deemed as an oxidant complementary to •OH in degrading recalcitrant contaminants because SO4•- provides a longer lifespan compared to •OH, albeit possessing such oxidizing ability comparable each other. We previously envisioned an interesting radicalization pathway, in which SO42- species are anchored on metal oxide surface and are transformed into SO4•- analogues via •OH ↔ SO4•- inter-conversion. SO4•- species are then utilized to decompose aqueous pollutants. This presentation showcases our mechanistic study on the novel radicalization pathway, where SO42--functionalized metal oxide surface is initially computed for the observation of energetics altered. Reaction runs under fine-tuned environments served to identify the rate-determining step to dominate the overall radicalization pathway and to corroborate that •OH ↔ SO4•- is of high plausibility. |
