Dynamic Change of Pronounced Structural Colors through Mechanical Deformation for Active Camouflage |

The structural colors are dynamically tunable with mechanical deformation by embedding the colloidal array in an elastic matrix. However, such compositions usually render the films transparent and structural color lowly saturated. Therefore, we design mechanochromic films and patterns that show structural colors with high saturation. The silica particles have repulsive interparticle potential and form a nonclose-packed array, whereas polydopamine nanoparticles are inserted into the interstitial voids. As polydopamine nanoparticles reduce incoherent scattering, the pronounced structural color is arisen from the films. Moreover, the photonic films show a dynamic color change according to deformation. As the large strain is applied to films, the photonic effect is overwhelmed by absorption of polydopamine nanoparticles. This unique property is used to make color-tunable and hidable patterns. Finally, the photonic films are appealing for anti-counterfeiting and active camouflage. |
