Synthesis and Characterization of Diblock Copolypeptides Revealing Selective Self-Assembly Behaviors in Nano-Thin Films |

A series of well-defined diblock copolypeptides with various compositions was synthesized, Poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate)-b-poly(ε-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine) (PBLGm-b-PBCLn), through the living ring-opening polymerizations of γ-benzyl-L-glutamate and ε-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine N-carboxyanhydrides with nickel catalyst system. The obtained polypeptides are easily processable and thermally stable up to around 150℃. Their morphological structures and orientation details in nano scale thin films were investigated by carrying out in situ GIXS measurements during heating and subsequent cooling and quantitative GIXS data analysis. The diblock copolypeptides in nano-thin films were found to have the α-helical conformation and to form fibrils. The fibrils are present in the thin films of the copolypeptides; interestingly, the films are composed of two different rotationally isomeric hexagonally (HEX) packed cylinder structures that are preferentially oriented in the film plane. |
